ONE CEBU: Standing through disasters

Tourist spots, delicacies, and etched history molded the Queen City of the South—Cebu. Behind its façade beauty, it actually faced countless Typhoons, unexpected earthquakes, and rising floods. Despite that, Cebu stayed resilient in facing these natural challenges, a testament of their strength, adaptability, Cebu has a history of experiencing frequent natural disasters, shaping the culture and mindset of its people. One of the major events Cebuano’s has experienced is the traumatizing, spined-chilling Super Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) in 2013. But Cebu was not only greeted by super typhoons over the past years, Earthquakes barged in with no warning. In 2013 Bohol shook with no warning and it was felt very strongly in Cebu. These Major Events have tested the Cebuano Resilience. But how did Cebu remain resilient? The People of the Queen city of the south has traditionally practiced “bayanihan”, or communal unity. It can be seen clearly in Cebuano Disaster Response, and even a simple act of kindness like helping a neighbor in times of need. When a typhoon is expected, Cebuano’s turn to Him for safety measures as they are Faithful and Spiritually strong. It helps them provide emotional support and a sense of light within the darkest of times. Cebuano resilience during disasters is rooted in community spirit, faith, and being resourceful. While challenges remain, ongoing efforts to improve disaster preparedness, response, and recovery are being made into reality has also combined with the unwavering spirit of the people, contributing to building a more resilient Cebu.
