Governor Gwendolyn Garcia affirmed the program’s commitment, stating that “Every child in Cebu deserves access to quality education regardless of location.” With Php 5 million in government funding and added support from private partners, more than 80 rural schools have been equipped with interactive whiteboards, tablets, and high-speed internet. Recent data shows a 25% rise in student participation in online learning, as DepEd’s curriculum now aligns with the digital tools used in classrooms. Designed to boost digital literacy, engagement, and academic performance, the initiative ensures rural learners receive the same quality education as students in more developed areas.
MANDAUE CITY’S “SKILLS FOR THE FUTURE” PROGRAM EMPOWERS SENIOR HIGH STUDENTS

Mandaue City Department of Education (DepEd) division has launched the “Skills for the Future” program in 2025 to equip senior high school students with practical, industry-relevant skills that enhance their employability and prepare them for real-world careers.The program offers specialized training in digital marketing, coding, culinary arts, and tourism, giving students access to diverse learning pathways aligned with current industry demands. Local businesses and industry experts are partnering with the city to provide mentorship and hands-on experience, while technical-vocational institutions offer accredited training and certification. Aligned with DepEd’s K–12 curriculum, the initiative aims to strengthen career readiness by ensuring students gain valuable kills and exposure to high-demand fields. Officials note a significant increase in student confidence and preparedness, with many participants becoming more competitive for employment or further education opportunities. “We are investing in our students’ future by equipping them with the skills they need to succeed in a rapidly changing job market,” said Mandaue City Mayor Jonas Cortes.
Cebu Province Expands Community Libraries to Boost Lifelong Learning

CEBU, PHILIPPINES–Cebu Provincial Government, in partnership with the Department of Education (DepEd), has expanded its “Community Libraries Project,” establishing easily accessible and well-equipped libraries across various barangays aiming to strengthen literacy and promote lifelong learning among residents of all ages. Governor Gwendolyn Garcia emphasized the broader purpose of the program, stating that the new facilities are “more than just repositories of books; they are centers of learning, community, and opportunity.” To date, more than 50 community libraries have been opened, each offering a diverse collection of books, computers, and educational materials. Local volunteers and trained librarians help run the facilities, organizing reading programs, workshops, and storytelling sessions that encourage children and adults alike to embrace the joy of reading. Beyond literacy, the libraries are envisioned as community hubs, providing safe and enriching spaces where residents can engage in cultural activities and collaborative learning. The provincial government allocated PHP 4 million to support the project, covering construction, book acquisition, equipment, and staff training. Additional support has poured in from local businesses and civic groups, which have donated resources to further strengthen the facilities. Open to students, teachers, and community members, the libraries continue to evolve as vital pillars of education and engagement, by offering accessible learning opportunities helping Cebu to foster a culture of curiosity, strengthen community bonds, and support the province’s long-term vision of inclusive and sustainable development.
